The State has launched many initiatives to revamp school and higher education in
the state in a bid to provide employable workforce to the industry. During the 11th
Five year plan, 300 world class schools, 100 ITIs, 10 Polytechnics, 10 colleges
and 10 Centres of Excellence have been envisaged.
To cater the educational requirements of the students, the Government of Punjab
would fully utilize the Educational Satellite (EDUSAT) facility in the state for
educational purposes and a state hub had been installed at Mohali. EDUSAT had been
launched by the ISRO to facilitate imparting of education at the national level.
In addition, more than 260cr has been spent on primary school education under Sarva
Shiksha Abhiyan. The Government has also started the Adarsh School Project for providing
quality education to rural students. These schools offer spacious buildings with
other modern facilities including the latest equipment pertaining to computer education
and information technology.
Department of Higher Education has also started utilizing the services of the British
Council to impart exclusive English training to faculty at degree colleges as a
part of the Capacity building programme for the faculty at degree colleges. Other
initiatives include:
- Computer Education made compulsory for classes VI to
XII.
- Establishment of Pushpa Gujral Science City by Government
of Punjab.
- Approval for 13 new degree colleges and 20 model schools
in educationally Backward districts of the state by MHRD*
- Development of 9 ITIs on PPP mode and
3 polytechnics colleges.
