Fourth highest rail density among all States and Union Territories in India with the railway line length of 2.134 km.

The state boasts of fourth highest rail density among all States and Union Territories in India with a railway line length of 2,134 km criss-crossing the state. It is also well connected with most parts of the country and is in close proximity to Delhi/NCR.

Punjab is also vigorously upgrading railways infrastructure to improve connectivity with other States with a chain of new tracks and construction of rail bridges as well as metro projects in the major cities in the State with:
  • Proposed development of Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) project on the eastern corridor (Rs. 11,589 cr) starting from Ludhiana till Sonnagar/ Dankuni.
  • Proposed development of railway line between Chandigarh-Ludhiana by 2011.
  • Around 27 railway bridges nearing completion and 26 new are proposed to be built in the next two years.
